Training Techniques
North Island Canine is a strong advocate of evidence-based learning theories which encourage trust and build positive bonds between humans and their dogs.
We do not train using force, pain, fear, intimidation or any other dominance theory techniques. We adhere to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour's recommendations which states; "focus on reinforcing desired behaviours [positive reinforcement], removing the reinforcer for inappropriate behaviours, and addressing the emotional state and environmental conditions driving the undesirable behaviour."
We are educated in assessing your dogs behaviours and are able to address the underling issues to counter condition and change associations using things your dog finds positive. Training should be fun for both the owner and the dog!
By rewarding for behaviours that we enjoy the likelihood of them doing the preferred behaviour increases with consistency. There are many things we don't want our dogs to do, we often get caught up in telling them "no" without giving them an alternative of what we would prefer. We can give you the tools on how to problem solve. Your dog jumps up on guests when they arrive? Solution: Teach your dog to "go to place" instead.
We pride ourselves on being creative as well as sensitive to you and your families needs. When hiring a trainer we want you to feel confident and comfortable in your choice. You are your dogs advocate and at North Island Canine we put safety first.
Dog training is a science based field so credentials are important. Check ours out below!
